Frequently Asked Questions

Most Frequently Asked Questions

What is mastic gum?

Mastic gum is a 100 % natural product used since ancient times for normal digestion, oral health and other effects. It is the resin of the Chios variety of Pistacia lentiscus, which is further processed into tears (raw mastic gum), powder from crushed tears and mastic oil. Mastic gum is an ingredient in modern Masticlife dietary supplements, cosmetics, toothpastes and mouthwashes.

How and for what does mastic gum work?

  • Mastic gum contributes to the normal function of the digestive system.
  • Mastic gum has an antibacterial effect in the oral cavity.

(These are the only claims that may be used in connection with the effects of mastic gum in view of the applicable legislation.)

Which mastic gum to choose?

When choosing mastic gum, it is important to know what effect you expect.

Mastic tears, its original form, are chewed. They have a distinctive woody-fruity taste and a pleasant aroma. For many people, chewing mastic gum is a healthy habit. If you are just starting with mastic gum, find out how to start chewing.

Mastic capsules are modern dietary supplements designed to deliver the effect of mastic gum directly to the stomach. In addition to the formula with pure powder, you can choose capsules enriched with other ingredients.

Mastic Powder may be more convenient to take, and it also works in the oral cavity and in the esophagus.

In all cases, make sure the raw material is authentic. Given the price of mastic gum, some producers find it worthwhile to counterfeit even mastic tears.

How to dose mastic gum and what to watch out for when taking it?

Mastic gum practically cannot be overdosed, so if you like chewing it, you do not need to restrict yourself in any way.

However, for dietary supplements it is usually unnecessary to exceed the recommended dosage and take more than 2 grams of pure mastic gum per day.

Taking mastic gum carries no risks, but please pay attention to these warnings:

  1. Mastic gum lowers blood pressure. This cannot be stated as a beneficial effect of mastic gum, but we consider it important to point this out. In practice this applies only to people with very high blood pressure, but if you have low blood pressure, check whether mastic gum will lower your blood pressure even further.
  2. Do not take mastic gum together with probiotics. It does not affect the effectiveness of mastic gum, but the antibacterial effect of mastic gum degrades live cultures into an ineffective ingredient. Always take probiotics, live cultures, with at least a 3-hour gap from mastic gum. Do not take products that combine mastic gum and probiotics.
The only exception to taking mastic gum together with probiotics is Mastic Vital, which uses a double action capsule in which mastic gum and probiotics are separated and act independently of each other.
(When following this rule, do not confuse probiotics with prebiotics, which on the contrary are ideal for combination with mastic gum and simultaneous intake.)
  3. If you feel heaviness or pressure in the stomach when taking mastic gum, take mastic gum at least 30 minutes before a meal. The feeling of pressure disappears. It is a common phenomenon in people suffering from gastritis, reflux or Helicobacter pylori infection.

What is the difference between mastix, mastic, mastiha and mastika?

The word mastic is a transliteration of the original Greek name μαστιχα. In Czech you may also encounter the designation mastika. In German, mastix is used, and in English mastic.
